What Are the Odds You'll Wait an Hour for a Theme Park Ride?

Every theme park ride is a gamble. Sure, you might race through the line for a fun, enjoyable ride. But you might just as easily spend over an hour, back to back, waiting for a ride that will be over in minutes.

To find out the riskiest ride and theme park bets, we pulled wait-time records covering 49 theme parks and water parks across the six big operators, Disney, Universal, Six Flags, Cedar Fair, SeaWorld and Herschend, and calculated, for every ride and every park, how often the wait crosses the one-hour mark.

Roughly 135,000 ride-days of data, tracked across a window that runs up to 212 days per attraction. Then we did the thing we always do: turned it into odds.

You can see below where the odds are in your favor, and where the line is likely to win.

Operators With The Highest Probability Of An Hour+ Wait

# Operator Parks Ride-days Chance of 60+ min Odds
1 Universal 7 21,478 12.4% +707
2 Disney 12 63,154 8.1% +1140
3 Cedar Fair 8 14,990 4.6% +2060

5 SeaWorld 6 8,905 2.5% +3875
6 Herschend 2 6,300 1.5% +6462

Universal is the worst bet in the industry, but read the ride-day column. Disney tracks nearly three times as many ride-days because Disney parks have three times as many things to stand in line for, and a lot of those things are boat rides that swallow thousands of people an hour. Universal's portfolio is smaller and concentrated in exactly the kind of ride that generates a queue.

Herschend, meanwhile, runs Dollywood and Silver Dollar City at a combined 1.5%. If your family's tolerance for standing in the sun is low, that's your answer.

Rides With The Highest Probability Of An Hour+ Wait

Every attraction below is a minus number, meaning on the majority of its recorded days, the average wait across the full operating day was north of 60 minutes. All have at least 30 days of history, so these estimates are solid rather than ballpark.

Epic Universe's Mine-Cart Madness went 206-for-206. Not "usually." Not "on weekends." Every single tracked operating day, the ride's full-day average wait was over an hour. It's the only attraction in a 1,207-ride dataset with a perfect record, and it's a family coaster in Super Nintendo World that carries a fraction of the riders Hagrid's does. Even the confidence interval can't find room for doubt: 98.2% at the low end.

Also worth appreciating: five of the top 20 are at Tokyo DisneySea, a park whose reputation among enthusiasts is "the best on Earth." The data suggests everyone got the memo.

Master Blaster is the one line to hold lightly. It has only 37 recorded days, being a water coaster at a seasonal water park, so its true rate could plausibly sit anywhere from 69% to 92%. Still a heavy favorite. Just a fuzzier one.

The Same Ride, Very Different Odds

The most actionable finding in the study: identical attractions carry wildly different odds depending on which park you ride them at.

1. Mario Kart - Universal Studios Japan (Koopa's Challenge): 98.1%, -5200 - Epic Universe (Bowser's Challenge): 76.4%, -324 - Universal Studios Hollywood (Bowser's Challenge): 24.1%, +316

2. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey - Universal Studios Beijing: 36.3%, +175 - Universal Studios Japan: 23.1%, +333 - Islands of Adventure: 1.4%, +6967 - Universal Studios Hollywood: 0.5%, +21100

3. Flight of the Hippogriff - Universal Studios Japan: 47.2%, +112 - Universal Studios Beijing: 18.6%, +438 - Islands of Adventure: 17.5%, +473 - Universal Studios Hollywood: 0.5%, +21100

4. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train - Shanghai Disneyland: 88.2%, -748 - Magic Kingdom: 16.0%, +524

5. Tower of Terror - Tokyo DisneySea: 79.2%, -382 - Disney's Hollywood Studios: 14.6%, +584 - Disney Adventure World Paris: 4.2%, +2256

6. Toy Story Mania - Tokyo DisneySea: 99.5%, -21100 - Disney California Adventure (Midway Mania): 6.7%, +1392 - Disney's Hollywood Studios: 4.2%, +2256

7. Frozen Ever After - Tokyo DisneySea (Anna and Elsa's Frozen Journey): 99.4%, -17200 - Disney Adventure World Paris: 57.9%, -138 - Epcot: 21.0%, +376 - Hong Kong Disneyland: 8.5%, +1078

8. Soarin' - Tokyo DisneySea (Fantastic Flight): 99.5%, -21100 - Shanghai (Soaring Over the Horizon): 53.9%, -117 - Disney California Adventure: 21.4%, +367 - Epcot (Across America): 6.4%, +1462

9. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance - Disneyland: 38.3%, +161 - Disney's Hollywood Studios: 29.2%, +242

The Hollywood pattern is the one to underline. Universal Studios Hollywood runs the same Wizarding World rides as Orlando and Osaka, and its Forbidden Journey averaged over an hour exactly once in 212 days. Same ride, same movie, a rounding error instead of a half-day.

Rides With The Lowest Probability Of An Hour+ Wait

Famous, heavily ridden attractions that never once posted a 60-plus-minute daily average.

# Ride Park Days tracked Days over 60

8 Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain Disneyland Park Paris 204 0
9 Pirates of the Caribbean Tokyo Disneyland 174 0
10 Sindbad's Storybook Voyage Tokyo DisneySea 167 0

Be clear about what this does and doesn't say. Peter Pan's Flight absolutely hits 60 minutes on a summer afternoon. Anyone who has stood in that Fantasyland switchback knows it. What never happened, across 424 combined days at two parks, is the line staying that bad all day. On these rides, the hour-long wait is a window you can avoid. On Mine-Cart Madness, it's the operating condition.

Methodology: How We Set The Line On The Lines

We pulled historical wait times from queue-times.com for every park listed under the six big operators, covering January 1 through July 31, 2026. That came to 69 parks identified, 49 with enough reported data to use, 1,207 unique park-and-ride combinations, and 151,157 individual wait-time readings rolled up into roughly 135,000 ride-days. Days the site flagged as forecasts rather than completed days were thrown out before collection, and August was left alone as an unfinished month.

For each ride on each operating day we built a duration-weighted average wait, so a park day split into a short morning slot and a longer main slot gets weighted by the hours each one actually covered. Then we counted how often that daily average cleared 60 minutes. Worth being clear on what that means: the bar here is a full day averaging over an hour, not a momentary spike at 2 p.m. A ride that hits 90 minutes after lunch and sits at 15 the rest of the day does not count, which makes every figure in this piece a conservative read.

Rather than smoothing thin samples toward the average, we left every ride at its observed rate and attached a 95% Wilson confidence interval so you can see how much rope each number deserves. Anything under about 10 recorded days is too thin to lean on, and 30 or more starts to hold up, so every ride in the leaderboards clears 30 days. Attractions showing a perfect record across a single tracked day are noise, not findings, and they sit this one out.

The implied probability is then converted to an American moneyline, the same way a sportsbook would price it. If you want to see how the percentages here translate into the plus-money and minus-money figures scattered through this piece, run them through our betting odds calculator and watch implied probability turn into a moneyline in real time.

The headline figure, an hour-plus wait roughly 7.0% of the time, is the raw share across every ride-day in the dataset, not an average of park averages. Park-level numbers work the same way, pooling every ride-day recorded at that park, which means parks stocked with carousels and train depots grade out better than parks built around a handful of headliners. That is a real feature of those parks, not a quirk of the math.

These odds are for entertainment purposes only and reflect historical reported wait times, not live queues or bookmaker prices.
